Hiking Acatenango or Pacaya from Antigua: What to Know Before You Go

Volcán de Fuego erupting at night, seen from Acatenango's summit

Why people fly to Guatemala specifically for this

Acatenango sits directly across from Volcán de Fuego, one of the most consistently active volcanoes in the world. Camp overnight near Acatenango's summit and you watch Fuego erupt - actual lava, at close range - in the dark. It's the single most-photographed, most-talked-about experience near Antigua, and it's genuinely as good as the hype.

Acatenango vs Pacaya: pick the right one

Acatenango is the serious version - a full-day (usually overnight) hike to roughly 3,976m, cold, steep in places, and physically demanding, but the Fuego eruption views are unmatched. Pacaya is the accessible version - a half-day hike, far gentler, ending with roasting marshmallows over active volcanic vents. If you're short on time or fitness isn't the priority, Pacaya is a genuinely great afternoon. If you want the full lava-at-night experience and have a full day (or two) to spare, it's Acatenango.

What to actually pack

It gets cold at altitude - genuinely cold, often near freezing overnight on Acatenango, even though Antigua at the base is warm during the day. Layers matter more than any single piece of gear: a base layer, a warm mid-layer, and a proper windproof/waterproof outer layer. Good hiking boots (not sneakers - the volcanic ash trail is loose and steep), gloves, a headlamp, and a refillable water bottle. Most tour operators provide a sleeping bag and rent extra jackets on-site if you land in Antigua without full gear, so don't panic if you show up underprepared.

Book your base in Antigua, before and after

Tours leave from and return to Antigua, and you'll want a comfortable, warm place to shower, sleep and recover on both ends - the hike is genuinely tiring. Our Central King Loft and Antigua Three-Bedroom House are both a few minutes' walk from the historic center where most tours pick up, with hot water, real beds and fast wifi waiting for you when you're back down.
